Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is a beautiful landlocked country rich in diversity, featuring low-lying semi-desert areas with lush highlands with forests and lakes. Situated on a high plateau in Southern Africa and covering an area of 390,245 square kilometres, the country offers a different perspective from what is often portrayed in the media. Despite political and economic struggles, Zimbabwe is a wonderful place with resilient and welcoming people. Formerly known as Rhodesia during colonial times, the country has been a focus of exploration for centuries. Cecil John Rhodes oversaw the construction of the first railway line across the country. David Livingstone was the first European to witness the impressive Victoria Falls, named after Queen Victoria.
For adventure enthusiasts, Zimbabwe has a wide range of outdoor activities. Visitors to the Victoria Falls area can enjoy white-water rafting, kayaking, micro-light flights, parachuting, horseback riding, cycling, and the world’s highest bungee jump. The Lake Kariba area offers sailing, house-boating, and other water-based activities. All the History enthusiasts can visit the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, located only an hour from Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe is also a superb safari destination. Home to a diverse array of wildlife including the “Big 5” (elephant, leopard, rhino, lion, and buffalo) and a haven for bird lovers, with over 600 species recorded. Hwange National Park, known for its large elephant population, is among the country’s most famous attractions.
Victoria Falls, bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia, is a stunning natural wonder and a popular tourist attraction. Named after Queen Victoria by David Livingstone, the falls are locally known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” or “The Smoke That Thunders”. The entire volume of the Zambezi River flows into the falls, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle that can be seen for miles. The area offers opportunities for adventure and relaxation with excellent accommodation and dining options in the town near Victoria Falls.
